WCC to Snowden
The Famous Balcony Falls.
For the Adventurous: Balcony
Falls offers the only Class III rapid
on the upper James River.
From our put-in to the public
take-out at Snowden, is about 7
miles. We generally allow 4 hours
for this trip.
After launching in your sit-on-top
kayak you will encounter two Class
II rapids before reaching the
confluence of the James and
Maury Rivers. There the river
widens and the mountains close in
around the river.
Unusual looking rock along the way.
Vertical View of Balcony Falls.
Pristine Wilderness:
Along the way, there are
several opportunities to
stop and enjoy the
Wilderness around you
and where you can look for
the American Bald Eagles
that have been seen on this
trip.
After scouting and running
Balcony Falls, its into the
flat water of Snowden. The
take-out is on the left at a
public boat landing about 2
miles below the class III
rapid.
There the boats and gear
will be loaded on the bus
and shuttled back to
Wilderness Canoe.
