Rivervale to Snowden
The Famous Balcony Falls.
For the Adventurous: Balcony Falls offers the only Class III (sometimes IV) rapid on the upper James River. From our put-in to the public take-out at Snowden, is about 7 miles. We generally allow 4 hours for this trip. After launching in your sit-on-top kayak you will encounter two Class II rapids before reaching the confluence of the James and Maury Rivers. There the river widens and the mountains close in around the river.
Unusual looking rock along the way.
Vertical View of Balcony Falls.
Pristine Wilderness: Along the way, there are several opportunites to stop and enjoy the Wilderness around you. Your guide will show you some good stopping spots and where to look for the American Bald Eagles that have been seen on this trip. After scouting and running Balcony Falls, its into the flat water of Snowden. The take-out is on the left at a public boat landing about 2 miles below the class III rapid. There the boats and gear will be loaded on the bus and shuttled back to Rivervale (WCC).
